Your walk is about discovering and rediscovering our old Gothenburg. Gothenburg was founded in 1621 by Gustaf II Adolf, and the route Old Gothenburg means that your route leads to the first city at the mouth of the Göta Älv river: Nya Lödöse. At the end of the 15th century, Nya Lödöse was built on the site where Gamlestaden is today. That's where you're headed.

The starting point is the Pilgrimscentrum at Masthugget or from wherever you decide. There are many roads between Masthugget Church and the end of the stage, Nylöse Church. On foot, by bus, tram or train, Gamlestadstorget can be an option for your tour.

Find history along your path. Enjoy the view. Hike up to Skansen Kronan. Make your way on foot through Haga and through the city within the Vallgraven (Great Harbor Canal and Fattighus Canal). Kronhuset is Gothenburg's best-preserved house from the 17th century (completed in 1654) and the German church that was built by governor Rutger von Ascheberg. Via Trädgårdsföreningen in central Gothenburg, you walk along Vallgraven and then on towards the river bank and Redbergsplatsen and Redbergsberget (with a splendid view!) and on towards Nylöse.

Welcome to the Old Gothenburg route.

Substrate: Asphalt.

Time: 2-3 hours excluding breaks.

Don't miss: The many churches along the stage.

Get here: Tram 9 or 1 towards Stigbergstorget, go to Masthuggskyrkan.

Accommodation: There are no specific suggestions for accommodation along the stage, but there are plenty of hotels to choose from in central Gothenburg.

The Pilgrimsleden Göta Älv has developed in a collaboration between: the City of Gothenburg, the Association of Property Owners in Gamlestaden, Gamlestaden, Ale Municipality, Lilla Edets Municipality, Trollhättan City, Vänersborg Municipality, Västra Götaland Region, the Church of Sweden, the Pilgrims Center in Gothenburg, Visit Trollhättan Vänersborg, the Tourist Board of West Sweden and the West Coast Foundation.

About Difficulty Grading

The grading of the trails is based on a common national standard. If you want to read more about this, visit the National Framework for Hiking Trails.

Even and firm ground: The terrain is generally flat. The hike requires no need to use your hands for support. No obstacles. Bridges are always present when crossing waterways.

Uneven and/or soft ground: Some changes in elevation. Certain sections may require hand support to maintain balance. There may be obstacles such as low stiles and short stairs. Minor obstacles like stones and roots. Boardwalks are present.

Loose or slippery ground combined with steep sections: Technical parts require hand support. There may be obstacles such as high stiles and longer stairs. Frequent sections with stones and/or roots. Boardwalks with deeper surrounding water.

Note: One or more of these features may be present along the trail section.
