Prepare yourself for a nature that might take your breath away.
Before you start your hike after this stage, we would like to inform you that this stage is the first to take you into Bohuslän's largest continuous wilderness area. After several continuous stages on the Bohusleden, there are no buildings and there are few intersecting public roads. If you are going to hike several stages in a row or continue the entire hike to Strömstad, you must expect to spend the night in a shelter or cabin, carry your pack for several days and that public transport, where it exists, is very sparse, especially on Saturdays, Sundays and school holidays. Also, expect that you will not be able to replenish your supplies near the trail. For your own safety, you must have charged all batteries, including your mobile phone. In the descriptive text for the upcoming stages, we will give you some tips on opportunities to provide provisions and public transport. If you are not going to hike all the way to Strömstad, your option is to agree with "someone" to drop you off and pick you up at a suitable place after the trail or in its vicinity.
When hiking along the Bohusleden, keep in mind that the birdlife at Stora Holmevatten is sensitive, so be careful if you are, for example, resting or having a coffee so that you do not stay near nests or otherwise disturb the birds. Thank you for being considerate!
The nineteenth section of the Bohusleden Trail starts in Lunden in the District of Tanum and takes walkers to the heart of the wild Kynnefjäll – Vaktarekullen. Prepare yourself for a countryside experience that is out of the ordinary. Along the way, you will then enjoy blueberry forests, heather fields, rushing streams and waterfalls. You can smell the scent of porcini at an open cloudberry bog. During the flowering season, you can see the northern white water lily bloom in dark and magical forest stars. And during spring and summer, listen to the desolate cry of the great crested grebe before dusk.
Your hike will surely be followed by vigilant animals such as deer, moose, beaver, lynx and maybe the occasional wolf. If you are lucky, you may see one of them. Otherwise, you will have to be content with the fact that they are so wild that they do not want to be near you.
A bit off the trail, in Lunden, is Vaktarestugan (eng: the guard cabin) where the action group Rädda Kynnefjäll (eng: Save Kynnefjäll) guarded for 20 years to prevent the final disposal of nuclear waste in Kynnefjäll. Today, the cabin is a museum. It is worth a detour along an easy gravel road.
By the small lake Äntervattnet there is a shelter and a toilet. There is also a shelter at Lake Säveleken where you can stay overnight. Vaktarekullen is the highest point of Kynnefjäll, at 206 metres above sea level. Here, the shepherd boys of old had a good view of their livestock and extensive views across the landscape with few trees.
Today there is a nice cottage with 12 beds, wood, a toilet and a spring with water (which should be boiled). The cottage requires no booking, but prepare to having to share the space.
The farm at Kasebo, situated northeast of Vaktarekullen, is an important connection for walking the Bohusleden Trail and other trails at Kynnefjäll. There is a gravel road here and a parking space.
